History of Sancagulis
A long time ago, there were no people living in this place. This place was first known as “Palandey” (Pangasinan term for mountain), a hilly and a thick forest.
Most of the townspeople at the time lived in the low-lying lands, like barangays Apalen and Carungay.
Oftentimes, when there was a heavy rain especially during the rainy season, the low-lying portions of the land were always under floodwaters, so families decided to vacate these areas and transferred to the higher lands like this place. They cleaned up the place and cut down the trees so that they would have a space to build their houses.
The earliest settlers were the Castillos, Curamengs, and Caniezos, who began to put up their houses in a straight line. They began planting some trees for their shelter. They also planted various crops, such as mongo and kamoteng kahoy, bamboo trees, and other trees which they cultivated for a living. The trees planted served as the property markers of the landowners.
Days, months and years passed by, and they thought of giving a name to this place. They decided to name the place “Sangcagulis” because of the way they built up their houses and the way they planted the trees.
From that time on, they called this place “Sangcagulis” in Pangasinan, which translates to English as “one line.”
