TIMELINE: History of Carlos P. Romulo (Wawa) Bridge

Romulo (Wawa) Bridge 1945: The Wawa bridge was built as a wooden bridge across Agno River to connect Brgy. Wawa and Brgy. San Vicente in Bayambang, Pangasinan. (1) February 15, 1970: "The Wawa Timber Bridge was inaugurated, and it was said to be the longest timber bridge in the Philippines consisting of 38 spans measuring 1,160 feet." (2) 1972: The wooden bridge was destroyed by a great flood brought on by Typhoon 'Biring'(?). (3) ~ 1976?: Construction of a new concrete-and-steel bridge began. (4) 1983: The new concrete-and-steel bridge was inaugurated and renamed after Carlos P. Romulo Bridge, in honor of the United Nations Secretary General and Foreign Affairs Secretary (Ferdinand Marcos administration) who had roots in the two towns that the structure connects: Bayambang, Pangasinan and Camiling, Tarlac. Romulo himself graced the unveiling ceremony. (4) 2012: Rehabilitation (re-decking) work was conducted by DPWH. (Note: The bridge is under the said national agency's jurisdiction, not the local government.) (5) July 28, 2022: DPWH inspected the bridge after an earthquake. (6) October 22, 2022: A portion (the northernmost span) of the Carlos P. Romulo Bridge collapsed due to overloading, hurting four people (manning one or two of the trucks carrying fertilizers and sand).
