LIST: Most Wanted Local Artifacts

 LIST: Most Wanted Local Artifacts

A personal list of most wanted artifacts for Bayambang's museum collection:

- facsimile of the first Pangasinan-Spanish dictionary by Cosgaya

- Aguinaldo's declaration of Bayambang as fifth capital of the First Philippine Republic

- a copy of Lacuesta’s "Bayambang Post" community newspaper

- a copy of theses compiling local folk tales and folk songs

- the last issue of "La Independencia" that was published here

- the printing press buried at Estacion during the Revolution

- copies of the local publication "Babasaey Ombaley" during the Filipino-Spanish War

- an old bicycle during the time of Lacuesta (the father of Philippine cycling)

- an old taltagan that will remind of Col. Ramsey's exploits here during the Filipino-American war against the Japanese Army

- artifacts from WWII: the huge concrete markers of Camp Gregg

- personal objects from famous personages from this town aside from those that we have collected

Why these artifacts? Because they are associated with historical events of national significance and local events and accomplishments that can be considered watershed moments in the annals of the town, moments that help define the town's identity through significant communal memory. ...

...And yet these are nowhere to be found.

Artifact: Death Record of Victoria Flora Aguinaldo. Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo's Daughter

Artifact: Death Record of Victoria Flora Aguinaldo. Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo's Daughter

On August 21, 2021, the death record of Victoria Flora Aguinaldo was posted by an administrator of the Facebook page, "Sementeryo: Heritage Cemeteries of the Philippines," with this caption: "This is the actual death record of the infant daughter of General Emilio Aguinaldo, Victoria Flora Aguinaldo, born during his northern Luzon retreat." (The image was attributed to David John Paul Sanglap.)
The text was written in Spanish, and it was translated as follows: "On Nov 12, 1899, was buried in the parochial cemetery, the body of Victoria Flora Aguinaldo y del Rosario, filipina (sic), toddler, child of Señor Emilio and Señora Hilaria del Rosario of Cawit, Province of Cavite. Died yesterday because of sickness at the age of 4 months. Buried for free. Certified true." [Signature of priest]
Today, the church cemetery being referred to has been abandoned and is now a residential area, with the Catholic Church property already donated to the occupants (according to parish priest, Fr. Reydentor Mejia). Only the arched portal made of brick remains.
Another historical record, however, claims that said daughter was buried "in the church," which I take to mean inside the church per se. Growing up, I saw with my own eyes a curious marker on the floor of the church (middle area, left side when facing the altar), but I can no longer remember what was on it, and when I inquired an elder (forgot who), she said it was a marker for "Aguinaldo's daughter," at a time I had no inkling who Aguinaldo could be, much less his daughter. So which is which?

Local World War II Account: Pelagio M. Ferrer, Sr.

Local World War II Account: Pelagio Galsim Ferrer Sr.

According to his son Joey Ferrer, "Pelagio Ferrer was the municipal chief of police appointed by the then mayor, Leopoldo Aquino from 1941 to 1944. He was also a guerilla leader with Co. Edwin Ramsey’s underground movement headquartered in Bayambang."

According to his daughter, Clarita Ferrer-Tagab, "So many stories had been passed from mouth to mouth about his patriotic activities during his term as Chief of Police during the Japanese occupation. I wasn’t born yet then, but as I grew up, I heard these stories. I really can’t imagine how a guerilla and at the same time a chief of police worked. But sad to note that seemingly these stories were buried to his grave. But to his family, these memories are the best souvenirs."

Continued Joey Ferrer:

"He had not spoken a lot about the guerilla activities. Tio [Inocencio] ‘Insyong’ Junio, a distant relative of the Martinez-Ferrer clan, himself proudly related how Pelagio Ferrer had saved his life. Junio was among three people apprehended by the Kempetai (military police of the Imperial Japanese Army from 1881 to 1945) and set for beheading. When his turn came, Pelagio Ferrer just passed by. Recognizing him, Tio Insyong yelled out, "Kuya Pelagio!" Unexpectedly, the Japanese in-charge signaled him to go and disappear. I heard this story from his mouth and also from [my mother, his wife,] Sofia Martinez Ferrer. In our then conversational Pangasinan, he joked, 'Batik ak binotey ebet.' His parting words most of the time worth remembering were, “Anggan naogip ak no patawag to ak nen Kuya Pelagio, bangon mo ak.” (Even if I am asleep, wake me up if it's Kuya Pelagio who asks for me.)"

"Sofia Martinez Ferrer, had recollected somewhat hazily and mentioned about the assassination of the mayor of Alcala in the Bayambang Public Market. Immediately after, a Japanese platoon cordoned off the area. About 5 or 6 guerrilla men clandestinely handed off their firearms to Pelagio, and he identified some firearm-bearing guerrilla men as members of his force. A few hours after the killing, the Japanese would demand a public meeting in the municipal kiosk and in his short talk would assert that there were no guerrillas existing in or around Bayambang."

"Hipolito Bato, also from Roxas St. (the same street as ours), recalled that a Visayan and a good shot with .45 was assigned to do the job. I am not certain though if Hipolito was a member of the movement."

"Two people from another guerrilla outfit came to town with a letter purportedly written by Gen. Lapham indicating his desire to personally meet Lt. Ramsey. According to two guys, they had to give the note to the chief of police as he was the one who knew of Ramsey’s existence and whereabouts in Bayambang. He held the two men for a night until some guerrilla guerilla officers had been convinced of the veracity of the Lapham’s note. Lapham came to Bayambang and they embarked on further recruitment and induction of new guerrilla operatives up to Aguilar and Lingayen."

"A group of guerrillas raided the municipal police headquarters of firearms and ammunition. Months before liberation forces had landed in Lingayen, Pelagio Ferrer feigned an asthma and feet eczema attack and stayed home. Zoilo Mamaradlo, the policeman officer of the day, before leaving headquarters, had all padlocks unlocked for easy access. The raid was led by Paulino Martinez, Pelagio’s brother-in-law. One municipal employee, Santiago Gozum, had encountered them in the process and Paulino had to threaten him with a .45 in the ribs."

"Every time one was incarcerated for any offense, even petty ones, would end up under investigation of being a guerrilla member or guerrilla sympathizer. One Valentin Caragan, a guerrilla officer, got incarcerated in the municipal jail for some petty offense. Mr. Caragan would recall, 'Ay si Tatay yo, no siber-siber lamay opisyal na Hapon, ay maingal, sipa tan pangol so onsabid siac. Balet no kasipot to, paitdan to ak na danom tan no arom Coca-Cola." (Oh, your father, whenever the Japanese officer is around, he gets noisy and hits me here and there. But once he leaves, your father asks someone to give me water and sometimes Coca-Cola.) Nen anggapo'y napiga da so inbulos da lamlamang. (When they could no longer extract anything, they set him free.) They called each other 'bayaw' and 'aring.' We found out later that the Caragans and the Martinezes are relatives. I first heard of this story in Grade V from Crisanto and Warlito, both sons of Mr. Caragan. From 1945 to 1946, the two had been together in the Northern Luzon area, Caragan as captain and Pelagio, as 1st Lieutenant. They both were honorably discharged in the late '46 or early '47 one rank higher."

"He was a constant patroller around town. One time, he and his group encountered some group of guerrillas in the boundary of Bayambang and Urbiztondo. Hinuli raw sila at pinag-iinom sila ng tubig na may darak. (They were caught and made to drink water with rice bran.) Only when Pelagio and group had identified themselves as municipal policemen and Pelagio was recognized as the municipal police chief and one of Ramsey’s men were they set free. On the bright side of this regiment, he had met a lot of new relatives of Sofia Ferrer, the Mabanglos, the Tamondongs, and the Perezes, among others."

"Sofia had talked about the clandestine departure of Lt. Ramsey to Manila, and the possible and safe but risky means was through a rail train boxcar. Pelagio was a member of the group that made the voyage possible. [Major Claro J.] Camacho (Ramsey's Aide-de-Camp) led the group up to Manila."

"There were two other people who had been incarcerated besides Valentine Caragan, and what is worst, their imprisonment lasted a month in the Kempetai Headquarters in Dagupan in different occasions."

"Pelagio had been placed under Kempetai custody upon complaint by some women merchants who took shelter in the Municipio. They alleged that they had been molested by the municipal policemen. (By command responsibility, Pelagio had to shoulder the blame.) It was later found out that the allegations were untrue. At the intervention of the then mayor, Leopoldo Aquino, Pelagio was released and assumed the command of the police force."

"According to Sofia M. Ferrer, Lt. Ramsey brought out the idea of plucking Pelagio out of jail. (Maybe it was said in jest.)"

"Paulino Martinez was the other one. He was presented by the chief of police and the mayor to replace his wife and young baby who had been detained in place of the wife’s brother. The brother was the leader of the group called 'Texas' during the period. According to some source, hawak nila ang [ferrocaril] (they were in charge of the train) from Bamban, Tarlac to San Fernando, La Union. Maslak ya pangipelagan da na sako-sakon masamit diman ed Nalsian. (Most of the sacks of sugar were unloaded at Nalsian.) This was affirmed by Inocencio Junio. He was a member of the group. Pelagio Ferrer and Mayor Aquino, after a month, were abl to obtain Paulino’s release."

***

"During his stint as municipal police chief, Pelagio and the family stayed at the Brillantes’ house in Roxas St. Ito ang lugar na nababalita diyan sa bayan na namimintana si Ramsey habang nanonood ng okasyon diyan sa dating amphitheater. (This is the spot from where, it was said, Ramsey watched occasions being held at the town amphitheater.)"

***

"Pelagio was an enlisted constable in the mid-1920s in the Province of Lanao, Southern Philippines."

***

"He retired as Chief Security Officer of the Philippine Veteran Administration Office (PVAO). As a WWII veteran, he was recognized as a Philippine Veteran pensioner as service-connected disability and was also a recipient of WWII US Veteran Pension as service-connected disability in October 1998 which was awarded to his spouse, Sofia M. Ferrer, a US citizen and resident of California, USA."

"Pelagio passed away in 1971."

A child of teachers and public servants (An attempt at local genealogy)

Son of public servants

(This personal post is an attempt at making a local genealogy based on oral knowledge handed down by relatives.)

I realized, belatedly, that I have forebears who were public servants in their time, just like I am now, something I never thought possible, mindful of the well-entrenched padrino system in the hiring of local government personnel.

The four Odon patriarchs and two Odon matriarchs of our clan lived in either Poblacion and the barrio of Wawa. They were, I understand, related to the Menors on the mother side and the Junios (not sure which side).

Telesforo Odon (a.k.a. "Porong") was a public elementary school teacher. From Bayambang, he traveled to far-away Iloilo one day to become a schoolteacher then as well, then came back home to become the Vice-Mayor of Bayambang in who knows what year. The Odons in the Visayas are said to have descended from him.

Evaristo Odon ("Intong") was a bespectacled teacher at Bayambang Central School, reportedly a strict one typical of his era (post-American colonial), then he became the Treasurer and the Librarian (whichever came first). I think he was also a successful businessman, the owner of one of the oldest rice mills in town, located in M.H. Del Pilar, and a commercial building (the Odon Bldg.) in the heart of the Public Wet Market.

Aside from Telesforo and Evaristo, the other siblings were public elementary school teacher Angel Odon ("Angkiw"); carromata operator and public market butcher Faustino ("Nonoy"), the father of my father Romeo; and Engracia ("Isay") Odon Romero; another lady named "Ilay"; and Esperanza ("Patsing") Odon Cucueco.

Descendants of "Isay"

A very pious aunt, Natividad Odon Romero-Agas, whom we kids fondly called Auntie Naty, was a Music teacher and a librarian at Bayambang Central School for a very long time. (She became my Music teacher I think twice, and I can't forget how she didn't spare me from receiving a hot-tempered sermon when I returned a borrowed book very, very late.) Auntie Naty's husband, Pablo Agas, was also a teacher in Central -- he became my teacher in Practical Arts.

Natividad's elder brother, Angelito Odon Romero Sr. ("Eling"), was the principal of Inirangan-Reynado Elementary School.

Eling's eldest was named Ben, who became Prof. Ben Odon Romero, a Filipino teacher at Pangasinan State University and the adviser of the laboratory high school organ, Banyuhay. (He's not really an Odon, but an adopted son. His real surname was Almirante Gelua, and he came from a family in Bicol who he said had Spanish blood.)

Ben Romero's daughter, Melanie Romero-Junio, is a music professor in the same school where he taught, now named Pangasinan State University-Bayambang Campus.

Eling's youngest son, Santi Romero, whom I haven't met yet, is a long-time officer at the main branch of the Social Security System in Quezon City.

Descendants of "Porong"

Having the right temper and personality for the job, Juanito Odon was handpicked as the Chief of Police by the mayor at the time, Atty. Jaime Junio. (There were no police academies then.)  Councilor Mylvin 'Boying' Junio and Municipal Budget Officer Peter Caragan told me of a tale about him getting drunk one time and firing his gun at an inmate who was known to steal cattle, killing the person.

His son, Jun Odon, is a Barangay Councilor in Wawa. Jun's wife, ___, works as a non-faculty officer at PSU-Bayambang.

Descendants of "Nonoy"

My aunt Zosima Solis Odon (Auntie Susay), the wife of my uncle Venancio (Berning), was a master teacher at Wawa Elementary School.

The eldest of my lolo Nonoy's children was ___ (Eping), and he reportedly worked as a mechanic at PSU. One of Uncle Eping's children was Rene Odon of M.H. Del Pilar who worked as a driver at the Bayambang Municipal Hall; he was also known as a crooner about town. One of Rene's children, Gemma Odon Fernandez, works as a pharmacist?/medical supply officer? at Bayambang District Hospital.

One of my siblings, Salome Odon Cristobal, is a teacher and worked at a school in Umingan, then Buayaen Central School, then Paragos Elementary School, and now works in Sapang Elementary School.

Descendants of "Angkiw"

One of ___'s children was ___ (Ying). I heard that Ying's daughter, Luzviminda Odon (whom I haven't met yet), is the administrator of Bayambang National High School. She married into the very political family of Espinos of Bautista town, and her son, Jerome Vic Odon Espino (whom I haven't met yet too), became the President of Sangguniang Kabataan Federation of Pangasinan.

One descendant of this branch, Joshua O. Caguioa, is a Science teacher at Bayambang National High School.

One of ___'s children was Reno. A daughter of his, Grace O. Abiang, works as a nurse at Rural Health Unit I.

Descendants of "Ilay"

Descendants of "Patsing"

I have yet to establish the exact connection, but I am also related to Municipal Councilor Benjamin Francisco 'Benjie' de Vera. Bae Patsing is a grandmother of his on his father's side (former Municipal Councilor Gerry de Vera), and an Odon Roy-Solis aunt of his is a second-cousin of my father (General Services Officer Chinita de Vera's side).

***

Junio side (my grandmother Soledad/Julia's "Bae Soling" De Vera-Junio side)

Because my father was also a Junio, I am most certainly related to all Junios in various degrees: former Mayor, Atty. Jaime P. Junio, the town's longest serving mayor because of martial law, and his son, former Vice-Mayor and Municipal Mylvin "Boying'' Junio, who has been consistently voted as a top municipal councilor.

May all those who have passed on rest in peace. And may their servant's heart live on in yours truly and the rest of us public servants.
