Bayambang, dapat alam mo na mayroong na ngayong tinatawag na Malasakit Center!

Ano nga ba ang MALASAKIT CENTER?

Ang Malasakit Center ay tumutukoy sa mga one-stop-shop para sa mga medical at financial assistance na ibinibigay ng iba't ibang ahensya ng ating gobyerno.

Ang MALASAKIT CENTER ay sagot sa matagal na nating panalangin sapagkat kapag nagpaconfine ka sa isang accredited hospital, COVERED ka 100% sa iyong HOSPITAL BILL.

Ibig sabihin nito ay wala kang babayaran sa iyong pagkakaconfine.

Ang pondo ng MALASAKIT CENTER ay galing din sa mga buwis na ibinabayad natin, ngunit salamat sa mga opisyal na nakaisip at nag-apruba nito, nagiging centralized ang mga financial at medical assistance ng gobyerno upang matulungan ang ating mga kababayan.

Pipila ka na lang sa loob mismo ng accredited hospital. Hindi mo kailangang lumabas at puntahan pa isa-isa ang iba't ibang mga opisina o ahensya. Sobrang laking tulong nito, lalo na roon sa mga pasyente na isa lang ang bantay.

Teka, Bayambang, hindi ba't ganitong-ganito rin ang matagal nang ginagawa ng ating Mayor's Action Center buhat nang maupo ang administrasyong Quiambao-Sabangan? Ang MAC ang umasiste sa mga indigent na pasyente o walang kakayahang magbayad ng kanilang medical/funeral expenses. 

Tama! Ang LGU po ay mayroon pang financial at burial assistance na binibigay sa mga indigent na kababayan. Ibigay lamang ang mga requirements na ito:

Emerging Weather Terminologies vis-a-vis Traditional Pangasinan Terms

(Or, Rain/Ulan vs Uran)

An article says the words 'hurricane,' 'cyclone,' and 'typhoon' are basically the same, all synonyms of 'tropical cyclone.' What about 'storm'? Aren't they all called 'bagyo' in Filipino? It can get confusing, right?

Perhaps realizing that there has to be different terms for different magnitudes and intensities of weather disturbances, PAGASA eventually came up with a list of tropical cyclone classifications according to wind speed. In Tagalog, ayon sa bilis ng hangin.

I wonder if they have ever heard of Pangasinan's unbelievable number of words for rain?

Here's what the agency has invented so far:

- low pressure area (LPA)/tropical disturbance: a weather system originating in the tropics or subtropics that maintains its identity for at least 24 hours and may cause heavy rainfall

- tropical depression (TD): maximum sustained winds of up to 61 kilometers per hour (kph)

- tropical storm (TS): maximum sustained winds of 62-88 kph.

- severe tropical storm (STS): maximum sustained winds of 89-117 kph.

- typhoon (TY): maximum sustained winds of 118-184 kph.

- super typhoon (STY): maximum sustained winds of more than 185 kph.

*If I may correct, the last one should be written as supertyphoon or super-typhoon because 'super' in this case is not an independent word but technically acting as a prefix, a particle that changes the meaning of the word it is attached to at the start of the word. To cite examples in popular usage: Superman, supermarket, superstar, supersaturated, supernova, superscript, supernumerary, superintendent, etc. We don't spell out these words with a separate 'super.' And we normally don't use prefixes such as mini-, mega-, quasi-, quadri-, etc. as independent words. #petpeeve

On the other hand, here are ancient and current Pangasinan terms, which -- though not as exacting and scientific -- are impressive in terms of their nuance in meaning and number of variety:

- Uran or rain per se is associated with the adjectives maksil (strong) or makapoy (weak).

Weak rain

- maya-maya - drizzle, often a prelude to a stronger rain
- tayaketek - light rain that result in a pitter-patter sound on the roof
- ura'y akulaw and uran ya maanos - other terms for tayaketek

Moderate rain

- dalapa - "rare weather phenomenon in which it rains while the sun is shining"
- uran-bakes or ura'y bakes - a little rain that suddenly comes then suddenly stops, while the sun is shining
- nepnep na duweg or uran na duweg - literally, ulan ng kalabaw or carabao's rain or carabao's non-stop rain, meaning not-so-strong, nonstop rain that drags its feet like a carabao and thus stays too long in the locality
- uran ya benger - literally, ulan na matigas ang ulo or hard-headed rain, meaning rain that is not that strong but doesn't seem to stop
- siyam-siyam - seemingly endless rain
- tagitak - sudden rain or downpour
- nepnep - rainy season

Heavy rain

- uran a libog-libog - particularly heavy rain
- beye-beye - "nonstop heavy downpour"
- binak-binak - "raining cats and dogs"
- aloboob - a typhoon that brings torrential rain
- alimbusabos - tornado

Cloudy weather

- malurem - 'cloudy,' a sign that heavy rain is approaching and there will be thunder and lightning, so people often stay inside their homes
- makâkauran - also used to refer to impending rain; synonyms: mankulirem or mankuliremdem
- makuyemyem or mayemyem - makulimlim; a general term to describe a mildly inclement weather due to gloomy, shadowy, overcast skies

Foggy weather

- kelpa - fog
- linaew - dew at night
- malinaew - foggy
- amol - dew at dawn or in the morning

Windy weather

- alamag - "a harsh wind but does not come as typhoon"
- abagat - southeast or east wind
- amian, miskey - north winds that bring cold weather
- timog - south wind
- maragem - windy
- mapalpalna or masiasiasem ya dagem - a gentle breeze

Flooding

Even flooding has resulted in a variety of terms.

- elnab - "weak flood that stays for a limited time"
- danas - "flood with strong force"
- lanayap or lanayap so danom - the large amount of water that accumulates during typhoon, resulting in widespread or great flood

Natural portents of bad weather

According to Andico, et al. (2015), “Signs of an impending storm (or strong rain or the coming wet season) are as numerous as the stars in the skies” among ancient Pangasinans, including those from Bolinao. "Locals knew when typhoons or aramag (makmaksil ya dagem) will occur in a particular time during the dry and wet season." "Locals also knew when rains would come earlier in between the seasons." These natural weather forecasters include:
- whirling-like cloud formation
- circling clouds from the east
- sudden surge of bitingly cold wind or pul-oy (biglaan ya mapalasapas ya dagem)
- winds (dagudog) emanating from the west (panrupan)
- early morning wind amyan (mapayapayan dagem na kabuasan)
- dark and red color that shades the sky
- sun’s corona which shades the moon
- cloud formations (narakam-rakam nen genem)
- fast sailing clouds are signs of storms
- whenever the sun is not in its full rounded shape
- at sunset, the sun is manlomdeg (kapantaklep) or turns red
- whenever a rainbow appears in the west with heavy clouds
- a short arc rainbow in the east or baylan
- thunder (karol) that roars from the north amianan (amian), the south bagatan (sagur), and east (baylan)
- white, sud-like bubbles of the waves (daloyon) or whenever the sea shows crystal-clear water
- strong waves, which appear like firefly (kalintutudoy kankanti)
- turbulent waves which criss-cross the vast sea as in a lightning (kirmat)
- the sounds emitted by the kingfisher salasak and the crow, as these fly northward
- any bird that quips for three consecutive nights
- the appearance of the flying ants andadalok (untitikyab ya tabuney)
- the advent of a flock of birds, manok-manok, from the north and flying towards the shore
- low-flying praying mantis
- chicken roosting on the treetops until late morning
- croaking of the frog
- whenever the sea cucumber (balat) rises above the water
- when schools of fish jump in and out of the sea
- algae, lumot-lumot (lamuyak), are washed ashore
- seaweeds (ruot) float in seemingly as these are tossed by the waves

Other associated beliefs

Rain is a blessing, but it is also a curse when it falls on the chosen date of any big event, such as wedding, christening, or anything that requires a major gathering of relatives, friends, and the community. Locals therefore routinely resort to little rituals to avert an impending rain.

If a big event is threatened by an impending rain, locals resort to these simple counter-spell strategies (panagsura rituals) on the day before the major activity:

- Hang outside the shirt that you will be wearing to the occasion.
- Wave a broom or broomstick at the sky. Offer raw eggs to saints on the altar.

Another panagsura ritual to forestall the bad weather (such as an impending thunderstorm) is performed on the big day itself:

- Burn cloth (any used cloth, for example) and shake the burning cloth under the floor of the house.

Yet another ritual that residents in Hermoza routinely do to dissuade, as it were, the impending rain from falling on their parade is as follows:

- Once it rains while everyone is inside the house, draw a sun on a piece of paper, have it colored, and show the drawing to the sky. But before it rains, draw a picture of the sun right on the soil.

Other beliefs and practices related to rain, thunder, and lightning are aplenty.

- When there is thunder, do not wear red, or lightning might strike you.

- Kung kumikidlat, magwilig ng suka sa mga bintana at pinto. (If there's lightning, spray vinegar on windows and doors.)

- Maglagay ng palaspas sa pintuan o bintana para pangontra sa kidlat. (Place a blessed palm leaf on the door or window to prevent lightning.)

- Kapag kumukulog, huwag maingay dahil naglalaro ng bowling si San Pedro. (When it thunders, don't make noise because San Pedro is playing bowling.)

- Manames ka ed perprimiron oran na Mayo pian arawi kad sakit. (Maligo sa pinakaunang ulan sa Mayo upang malayo ka sa sakit.)

- If the day is hot or humid and you want it to rain, give your cat a bath.

- Huwag gumamit ng payong na kulay pula o may patusok na bakal sa tuktok baka makidlatan. (Do not use a red umbrella or one that has a spike on the top because it might be struck by lightning.)

- Takpan ang mga salamin pag kumukulog at/o kumikidlat dahil tinatamaan ng kidlat ang salamin. (Cover glasses (glass windows) during thunder and/or lightning because the lightning strikes the glass.)

- Make the sign of the cross and say, "Jesus, Maria, Joseph," whenever there's heavy rain, lightning and thunder, as protection.

- Additionally, according to Santiago Villafania, “there's a traditional prayer or oracion passed down by the elders to ward off unforeseen obstacles such as sudden rain, especially during emergencies or urgent situations where immediate presence is crucial: “Lihis Tagitak Sagranatak Paparunatak.” Tagitak refers to sudden downpour.” A precolonial, pre-Christian oratio imperata if there ever was one.

"Maistapak" and other Pangasinan words for "maarte"

Having fun with Pangasinan language continues, what with new discoveries (or rather re-discoveries) from FB group pages focusing on the Pangasinan way of life.

One time, a random poster asked what maistapak means, and the answers proved to be another list of synonyms worth pondering on.

Maistapak -- that's another word I haven't heard for about, what, a hundred years? it turns out to mean:  dakël so ag to kaukolan o anapën (ang daming kailangan o hinahanap)

The synonyms, as alleged, are as follows:

"Dakel so andi-kakanaayan ya ibabaga to" (so many useless things he is saying)

Maarte - finicky

Makurisya -- never heard this bad-sounding guy before, but it turns out to mean metikuloso (meticulous)

Mapilipili - choosy

Delikado - delicate

Maistelo - from ma-style (full of style), presumably

Say gabay to, gabay to - what he wants, he wants (and gets it)

Pasidsirayew, Stariray, Pabida - show-offy

Ma-feeling - presumptuous

Mabaraan? - loves to rationalize or justifies things

Mayamay anta to - literally, knows a lot of things; figuratively, dispenses knowledge to show off

Mareklamo - complains a lot

Makorihe - tends to correct a lot of things

Makotaltik - ?

Metikuloso - meticulous

I know the list is incomplete because these words are words (or things) we grew up with. Children who were naturally finicky about a lot of things were sure to hear these words from straight-talking Pangasinenses. Other related terms not on the list are:

In German accent, Pangasinan language -- whatever perceived faults it may have -- is truly wunderbar! Aren't you proud?

Are E & I and O & U Interchangeable in Pangasinan?

Are E & I and O & U Interchangeable in Pangasinan? (Orthography matters) A younger colleague once asked me, "Aren't 'i' and 'e' and 'o' and 'u' interchangeable in the Pangasinan language?" I instinctively answered "yes" with a knowing laugh. But upon thinking further on the matter, I noticed that native speakers actually distinguish between these vowels, although with the reckless substitution occurring more in writing. We say bigis instead of biges, begis, or beges. We say lupot, but never lopot, luput, or loput. We have a barangay called Dusoc, which we never call Dusuc, Dosuc, or Dosoc, although sometimes other people spell it as Dosoc, which for me is wrong.

We always say buro, never boro, buru, o boru. Same with puto. We say ubong and utong, not obong or obung or otong or otung. We say bubon, not bobon or bobun or bubun. We say uong, not oong or oung. We say tuo, not too or tou.

Admittedly, we don't use /e/ as much as /i/ because we substitute it with the schwa sound: /ë/ or /ə/. Nevertheless, in certain instances, we allow variations for bai and laki like bae and lake when speaking. Your thoughts?

1. Kabataang Bayambangueña, Wagi sa Global IT Challenge!

Isang kabataang Bayambangueña, na si Lina A. Junio ng Bayambang National High School, ang kabilang sa mga nagwagi sa Global IT Challenge for Youth with Disability 2025 sa Ulsan, South Korea, kasama ang ibang delegado ng Pilipinas. Sinagot ng LGU-Bayambang ang gastusin ng koponan sa pamamagitan ng PDAO fund.

2. Mga Panibagong Tulong Pang-Edukasyon, Tinalakay

Sa isinagawang Local School Board Meeting, tinalakay ang P1.37M savings na gagamitin bilang supplemental budget para sa 60 printers para sa lahat ng paaralan at limang laptop, dalawang 75-inch smart TV, coupon bond para sa lahat ng teachers, SPED comfort room sa Bayambang Central School, at konstruksyon sa Malioer Elementary School.

3. Barangay Officials sa QC, Nag-benchmarking sa MRF

Ilang barangay officials mula sa Quezon City ang nag-benchmarking activity sa Materials Recovery Facility sa Brgy. Telbang upang matutunan ang best practices ng ESWMO sa waste management. Pinangunahan ang pagtanggap sa mga bisita ni MENRO Ma-Lene Torio at ng kanyang staff.

4. Undas 2025, Naging Maayos at Ligtas

Sa direktiba ni Mayor Niña, naging maayos at ligtas ang paggunita ng Undas ng mga Bayambangueño, salamat sa walang-patid na serbisyo ng mga kawani mula sa MDRRMO, PNP, BFP, BPSO, Task Force Disiplina, mga RHU, SEE, ESWMO, Engineering, at MSWDO sa pakikipag-koordinasyon sa mga barangay officials. Pinuri ng publiko ang pagtutulungan ng mga ahensya bilang patunay ng dedikadong paglilingkod ng LGU kahit sa mga araw ng bakasyon.

5. Mayor Niña, Naghandog ng Portable Canopies

Sa mga araw ding iyon, naghandog si Mayor Niña ng mga libreng portable shades o canopies sa public cemetery upang maprotektahan ang mga bumisita laban sa init at ulan habang inaalala ang kanilang mga yumaong mahal sa buhay. Laking pasalamat ng mga residente rito, na anila ay isang patunay ng taos-pusong pangangalaga ng LGU sa mga mamamayan sa panahon ng Undas.

 6. Mayor Niña, Nagpamigay ng Libreng Lugaw

 Namahagi rin si Mayor Niña ng libreng lugaw sa mga bumibisita sa mga sementeryo upang magbigay-ginhawa at iparamdam ang malasakit sa mga pamilyang nag-alay ng oras sa naturang okasyon. Nagpasalamat ang mga residente sa naturang handog na pamatid-gutom sa gitna ng abalang paggunita sa mga namayapa.

 7. Unang Batch ng BNHS WIP Students, Tinanggap ng LGU

 Mainit na tinanggap ng LGU ang unang batch ng Work Immersion Program students mula sa Bayambang National High School sa pangunguna ng Administrator's Office at PESO. Dumaan sa orientation ang mga mag-aaral bago ma-deploy sa iba’t ibang tanggapan ng munisipyo upang mahasa ang kanilang kasanayan. Layunin ng programa na ihanda ang mga kabataan bilang mga responsableng manggagawa sa hinaharap.

 8. Search for Outstanding Barangay Nutrition Committee, Ikinasa

Idinaos ng Municipal Nutrition Committee ang Search for Outstanding Barangay Nutrition Committee noong Novembre 3 at 4 para sa pitong piling barangay. Sinuri ang mga kalahok base sa kanilang implementasyon ng nutrition programs at best practices sa pangangalaga sa kalusugan ng mamamayan. Ang tatanghaling kampeon ay tatanggap ng mga cash prize, plake, at sertipiko.

9. Mayor Niña, Binuksan ang 33rd National Children’s Month

Pormal na binuksan ni Mayor Niña ang pagdiriwang ng 33rd National Children’s Month noong Nobyembre 3. Tampok sa programa ang pag-emcee at pagiging news anchor ng mga Little Mr. and Ms. Bayambang, sabayang pagsayaw, at sabayang pagbigkas ng Panatang Makabata.

10. Mayor Niña, Nagkaloob ng Motorsiklo sa BFP

Personal na naghandog si Mayor Niña ng isang motorsiklo sa Bureau of Fire Protection–Bayambang mula sa sariling pondo bilang tulong sa mas mabilis na pagresponde sa sunog at iba pang sakuna. Ang donasyon ay magagamit ng BFP sa agarang paghatid ng tulong at pati na rin sa kanilang mga information drive sa mga barangay.

11. LGU at GCash, Lumagda sa MOA para sa Community Service Card

Noong November 3, pumirma ng kasunduan ang LGU at GCash para sa pagpapahusay ng Bayambang Community Service Card. Layunin nitong mapabilis at mapadali ang mga transaksyon sa tulong ng digital at financial innovation. Ang proyekto ay isang hakbang patungo sa pagiging “smart town” ng Bayambang at sa mas inklusibong serbisyo publiko.

12. Eight Care Medical Supplies, Nagkaloob ng Assistive Devices

Malugod na tinanggap ng LGU ang ilang assistive devices o mobility aids na donasyon ng isang kaanak ni former LGBTQI Federation President Sammy Lomboy sa mga PWD at senior citizens. Kabilang sa mga donasyon ni G. Morris F. Camorongan ng Eight Care Medical Supplies Manila ang wheelchair, quad cane, at crutch. Mayroon ding kasamang 40 boxes ng face mask.

13. Clearing Operations, Tinalakay ng TFD

Pinangunahan ni Dr. Cezar Quiambao ang isang pulong ng Task Force Disiplina (TFD) noong November 4 upang talakayin ang mga clearing operations bilang paghahanda sa nalalapit na Christmas Bazaar at pagkabit ng Christmas lights sa Poblacion area. Kabilang sa mga napag-usapan ang pagtanggal ng mga lumang tarpaulin, road clearing sa mga pangunahing lansangan, at ang panukalang pagbuo ng TFD sa bawat barangay. Iprinesenta rin ng traffic consultant ang kanyang ginawang pag-aaral sa daloy ng trapiko.

14. Supplemental AIP, Inaprubahan sa MDC Meeting

Inaprubahan ng Municipal Development Council (MDC) ang Supplemental Annual Investment Program No. 2 for CY 2025 sa pulong na ginanap noong November 4. Ito ay dinaluhan ng mga Punong Barangay, CSOs, Local Finance Committee, at ni Councilor Jose Ramos at representante ni Cong. Rachel Arenas.

15. Safe and Conducive Workplace Seminar, Isinagawa

Noong November 5, nagsagawa ang HRMO ng Safe and Conducive Workplace Seminar upang palakasin ang kamalayan ng mga kawani sa kahalagahan ng kaligtasan, kalusugan, at kaayusan sa lugar na kanilang pinagtatrabahuhan. Si Dr. Madlyn D. Tiangco, Campus Executive Director ng PSU–Bayambang Campus, ang naging pangunahing tagapagsalita, at siyang nagbahagi ng praktikal na gabay para sa pagpapanatili ng isang positibo at kaaya-ayang workplace environment para sa mas epektibong serbisyo.

16. ONGOING: School-Based Immunization

Kasalukuyang isinasagawa ng RHU ang isang school-based immunization activity sa lahat ng paaralan upang maprotektahan ang mga mag-aaral laban sa tigdas, tetanus, diphtheria, at cervical cancer. Binabakunahan ang mga Grade 1, Grade 7, at mga babaeng edad 9 to 11, at kabilang dito ang pagbibigay ng measles booster dose. Ang immunization ay mabisang proteksyon ng mga mag-aaral laban sa mga mapanganib na karamdaman.

17. Feeding Angels, May Anniversary Feeding Activity

Noong November 5, nagsagawa ng espesyal na feeding activity ang Feeding Angels of Bayambang bilang bahagi ng pagdiriwang ng kanilang unang anibersaryo. Pitong undernourished na bata, 43 na indigent na benepisyaryo, at isang buntis mula sa Brgy. Cadre Site ang nabigyan ng tulong sa aktibidad na isinagawa sa pakikipag-ugnayan sa Nutrition Office. Ito ay pagpapakita ng grupo ng kanilang patuloy na malasakit sa kalusugan at nutrisyon ng mga kapwa Bayambangueño.

18. Malawakang Clearing Operation, Isinagawa

Isang malawakang clearing operation ang isinagawa ng iba’t ibang departamento ng LGU sa kahabaan ng Rizal Avenue, kabilang ang harap ng Bayambang Central School, upang alisin ang mga sirang karatula, illegal signages, at overgrowth ng mga punongkahoy. Pinangunahan ang operasyon ng MDRRMO, BPSO, Engineering, BPLO, Task Force Disiplina, at ESWMO sa iba’t ibang barangay na binabagtas ang pangunahing kalsada ng bayan. Tatlong truck ng sirang karatula ang nakolekta at agand na itinurn-over sa ESWMO.

19. Aktibidad para sa mga “Ausome Kids,” Isinagawa

Bilang parte ng 22nd ADHD Awareness Week, ang Rural Health Unit (RHU) ay nagbigay ng mga lecture sa mga tagapangalaga ng mga batang may autism o ADHD at ASD sa Buayaen SPED upang palawakin ang kaalaman ng mga carers hinggil sa tamang pangangalaga, nutrisyon, at oral health ng mga naturang bata. Nagbigay-saya naman ang Yakult Company sa pamamagitan ng libreng inumin at mascot interaction sa 45 na kalahok sa aktibidad.

20. Bayambang, Nakiisa sa 4th Quarter NSED

Noong Nobyembre 6, nakiisa ang Bayambang sa idinaos na Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED) para sa huling quarter ng taon. 21. Buklat Aklat, Nagtungo sa Nalsian ES

Ang literacy project ni Mayor Niña na "Buklat Aklat” ay nagpatuloy sa Nalsian Elementary School noong November 7, kung saan ang mga mag-aaral ay nakilahok sa isang book reading session upang mahasa ang kanilang reading skills at hindi mapag-iwanan sa edukasyon. Naging guest storyteller si Councilor Rhyan de Vera kasama ang LYDO, SK Federation, MNAO, BPRAT, at Task Force Disiplina.

 

22. Bagong Uniporme ng TODA Members, Muling Ipinamahagi

Muling nagpamahagi ng mga bagong uniporme para sa mga miyembro ng TODA ang LGU at mga donor partners nito noong Nobyembre 6 sa Pinoy Workers Satellite Office. Kabilang sa mga donors sina Mayor Niña at Dr. Cezar Quiambao, Vice Mayor IC Sabangan at BM Raul Sabangan, at Konsehal Zerex Terrado. Ang inisyatibong ito ay bahagi ng TODA Modernization Roadmap na layong makumpleto bago ang 2026.

23. Mga Proyektong Magpapayabong sa Wikang Pangasinan at Filipino, Ikinasa

Ang mga guro mula sa Departamento ng mga Wika ng PSU-Bayambang ay nakipagpulong kay Dr. Rafael Saygo ng MTICAO upang talakayin ang mga proyektong magpapalakas sa paggamit at pag-aaral ng wikang Pangasinan at Filipino. Tinalakay sa pulong ang kahalagahan ng ortograpiya bilang susi sa pagpapanatili ng kultura at pagkakakilanlan, at pinag-usapan din ang planong mga seminar, pagsasanay, at extension activities na naaangkop para rito.

23. Orientation on Adoption and Alternative Child Care, Isinagawa

Isang “Orientation on Adoption and Alternative Child Care Programs” ang isinagawa ng MSWDO noong November 7, sa layuning ipaliwanag ang mga batas at proseso ng pag-aampon at alternatibong child care upang mabigyan ng bagong pag-asa ang mga batang walang magulang o tagapag-alaga. Ito ay bilang bahagi ng adbokasiya ng MSWDO sa pagtataguyod ng mga karapatang pambata.

24. 2024 CBMS Data mula PSA, Pormal na Tinanggap ng LGU

Pormal na tinanggap ni Mayor Niña ang mga datos sa 2024 Community-Based Monitoring System mula sa Philippine Statistics Authority, sa isang turnover ceremony noong November 7. Ang nasabing datos ay magsisilbing gabay sa paggawa ng mga polisiya at programang nakabatay sa aktuwal na kalagayan ng mga Bayambangueño. Dumalo at naging saksi sa aktibidad ang mga kinatawan ng PSA, DILG, at DICT na nagpahayag ng suporta sa mas epektibong paggamit ng CBMS data para sa mas epektibong paggamit ng resources ng pamahalaan.

25. FPJ Panday Bayanihan Party List, Nagbigay ng Tulong Pinansyal

Noong November 7, ang FPJ Panday Bayanihan Party List ay nagbigay ng tulong pinansyal sa mga CVO ng Bayambang at mga karatig-bayan para suportahan ang mga pamilyang may mababang kita. Ginanap ang pamamahagi ng cash grant sa Brgy. Nalsian Norte Covered Court sa tulong ng tanggapan ni Mayor Niña.

26. Bayambang, Contender sa 1st Year CROWN Maintenance Award

Kinilala ng National Nutrition Council (NNC) Region I ang Bayambang bilang isa sa mga contender para sa 1st Year CROWN Maintenance Award sa ginanap na 2025 Gawad Parangal ng Nutrisyon sa Bauang, La Union.

Ang pagkilalang ito ay patunay patuloy na ipinapakita ng Bayambang ang pagiging huwaran sa pagsusulong ng kalusugan at nutrisyon sa Rehiyon I.

27. Mayor Niña, Nanguna sa PDRA para sa Bagyong "Uwan"

Bilang paghahanda sa pagdating ng bagyong “Uwan,” pinangunahan ni Mayor Niña ang isang Pre-Disaster Risk Assessment o PDRA kasama ang MDRRMC at mga Barangay DRRM Committee upang talakayin ang mga posibleng epekto ng bagyo at ang mga kinakailangang hakbang. Ibinahagi ng MDRRMO na posibleng direktang daraan ang bagyo sa rehiyon kaya posible rin ang malakas na ulan, hangin, at pagbaha. Ipinabatid din ng mga ahensya at barangay ang kanilang mga ginawang paghahanda upang matiyak ang kaligtasan ng mga residente.

28. Dr. Quiambao, Most Notable Stakeholder ng DepEd-R1 SDO I Pangasinan!

Pinarangalan si SATOM, Dr. Cezar Quiambao, bilang Rank 1 o Most Notable Stakeholder ng DepEd SDO I Pangasinan. Ito ay bilang pagkilala sa kanyang ibinigay na suporta sa pagpapatayo ng Don Teofilo C. Mataban Memorial School sa Brgy. Ligue, kung saan tatlong silid-aralan ang kanyang ipinagawa mula sa pribadong pondo. Tatanggapin niya ang naturang parangal sa 2025 Local Stakeholders’ Convergence sa Nobyembre 21 sa Kapitolyo.

A Little Demographic Shift
(The rural zeitgeist)

I can't help but notice that our little town is now slowly being populated by youngsters with curious non-native-sounding surnames that are not of the usual sort. I mean, not the usual mix of Chinese (Chan, Tan, Te, Chua, Uy, Wee, etc.), Spanish (e.g., Del Prado), and American (say, Napier, Logan, etc.), which we residents are long used to.

For instance, there is a little boy surnamed Singh (Indian). One fair-skinned girl has Dumitru as surname -- I asked around whether she is half-Romanian as I suspected, and it turns out that she is. Another girl is named Botwinik.

My most recent god-daughter has a Singaporean father of Indian descent so she has an atypical name. It is so foreign-sounding that I can't even recall it.

My next-door neighbor's young lady is partly of Arab descent and has a fitting name for it: Ayesha.

Recent beauty pageants included girls posing a challenge to conventional beauty standards just because they have obvious Indian and black (African descent) features.

Add to this mix the significant number of residents with Arabic-Islamic-sounding names, and it's a pretty diverse and -- dare I say the word -- inclusive picture.

The influx of various ethnicities is surely a challenge to small-town norms and, er, rigid weltanschauung.

I am sure the local schoolteachers and the Local Civil Registry Office have a better view from their big-picture vantage point.

I haven't even dealt with the choice of first names, which in itself is a babel of influences -- certainly a break from the old order. It's no longer even mainly American, which is the case with my generation. There seems to be, finally, a great departure from, if not a conscious rejection of, white America as the idyll, the "race" of prestige, or apex culture to aspire for.

Obviously because of inter-marriage, the ease and affordability of travel, and the widespread OFW phenomenon, not to mention decades of expatriates producing half-breeds, my little hometown is no longer what it used to be where everybody knew everybody that you only had to ask somebody's surname to get to know who his or her parents were and what part of the town he or she lived. It is slowly becoming a little global village.

One day, a random poster asked what maistapak (?) means, and the answer proved to be another list of synonyms worth pondering on.

I know the list is incomplete because these words are words (or things) I grew up being accused with by my elders from time to time. Understandably, they were essentially country bumpkins dealing with a kid who spent the first five years of his life in the big city. Being naturally finicky about a lot of things, from food to clothes to dining ware, I realize I was difficult to live with, especially with my hyperboles, so naturally the straight-talking Pangasinenses took to calling me names like:

Arloste, maarloste

Artikuliti, maartikuliti

All of these are funny, but only in retrospect. While it was all happening, it was, of course, pure hell-on-earth. 

In German accent, Pangasinan -- whatever faults it may have -- is truly wunderbar! Aren't you proud?

Ang Persons with Disability (PWD) Welfare Services ng Bayan ng Bayambang ay patuloy na nagsusulong ng mga programang naglalayong mapabuti ang kalagayan ng mga kababayan nating may kapansanan.
