Panagparukdok: A Traditional Fishing Practice in Barangay Tanolong

Panagparukdok: A Traditional Fishing Practice in Barangay Tanolong

Panagparukdok is a traditional fishing practice observed in Barangay Tanolong, Bayambang, Pangasinan, reflecting the ingenuity and intimate knowledge of nature possessed by local fisherfolk. Unlike labor-intensive methods, panagparukdok allows the fisherman to set the device along the riverbank and leave it to work quietly with the flow of the water and the movement of fish.

The panagparukdok itself is a simple yet effective tool made from a curved bamboo stick, fitted with a string and a hook at its end. Once positioned, it patiently awaits passing fish, requiring minimal supervision while remaining highly functional. This method is not bound by season and may be practiced throughout the year, demonstrating its adaptability to the river’s natural rhythms.

Fish caught through panagparukdok are typically sold in the local market, contributing to the livelihood of families in the community. Beyond its practical use, panagparukdok stands as an example of sustainable and resourceful traditions of Barangay Tanolong.
