Orchestra Music

Orchestra Music

Originally, prior to the use of electronic music, the height of the fiesta season in the Poblacion area of Bayambang and in the then 'barrio' of Wawa comprised of two actual musical orchestras squaring off all night long. They competed with each other by answering each one's musical performance with a matching piece, one after another, to show off their skills.

The yearly 'match' felt like it would never end as the two brass bands performed a wide repertoire from early evening up to the wee hours of the morning, providing joyous entertainment to the townsfolk and barrio folk.

An old favorite in town was Anastacio 'Asiong' Mamaril and His Band of nearby Malasiqui town and the Caranto Brothers Orchestra from the neighboring town of Basista. Today, Don Podring Orchestra of Basista town is an annual favorite.

An orchestra based in Brgy. Pangdel in Bayambang is the JC Datuin Digital Orchestra.

A typical old-fashioned orchestra follows a classic brass band/rondalla-influenced municipal orchestra setup.

The brass section provides the backbone of the ensemble, producing a loud, marching sound, with the bright and piercing trumpets or cornets leading the melody, the trombones supplying harmony and distinctive slide accents, and the tubas or sousaphones delivering a deep bass foundation.

The woodwind section adds color and melodic support, with the clarinet executing fast passages and ornamental lines, the alto and tenor saxophones contributing smooth harmony and counter-melodies, and the flute or piccolo providing light, high-pitched decorative tones.

The percussion section drives the rhythm and movement of the music, as the snare drum maintains the sharp marching beat, the bass drum establishes a strong, steady pulse, and the cymbals create emphatic crashes for transitions and highlights.

The string or local additions, when included depending on the arrangement, offer harmonic support through the guitar or bass guitar, while occasional rondalla instruments such as the banduria and octavina lend a distinct local flavor.

Optional or modern add-ons, when present in performances, include the keyboard, which supplies additional fills and sustained harmonies.

In essence, it is a festive orchestra dominated by brass and percussion, with woodwinds adding finesse and occasional Filipino string elements enriching its cultural character.

Today's orchestra bands have gone digital, eliminating live performances of musicians playing these actual instruments. They also employ singers accompanied by costumed male and female dancers performing neatly choreographed dances on stage.

Reveille

Orchestral sounds are also used during the reveille, a traditional bugle call used to wake the entire Poblacion area of the town at sunrise and signal the start of the town fiesta. Commonly played by marching bands during ceremonies or parades, it is a fast-paced, high-energy melody performed on brass instruments, often accompanied by drums. It acts as a musical signal rather than a marching song.
