Local Contemporary Music Bands
Bayambang's, and Pangasinan's, homegrown contemporary musicians took center stage at this year's street party as part of the annual town fiesta activities.
On the night of April 1, instead of merely fronting for well-known music bands from Manila, they were given the chance to own the stage and show locals what they've got all throughout the night. They played bossa nova, reggae, rock, heavy metal, pop, and electronic music at three separate stages along Quezon Blvd., drawing crowds of various tastes.
They have names such as I Hate Mondays, Avant Music, Henessy Band, Amurikut, El Labanana, Rush Avenue, Bandadz, Carl Timbol (solo act), and Metal 15, while the DJs included Bad Dee, Synor, Zhen, and Patrick. Other local bands are reportedly named Palkhatz Vakhatz and Ella Kutikots.
Over at the Public Auditorium, however, Don Podring orchestra -- now with female, and male, dancers -- of Basista town reigned supreme as usual, playing tirelessly an assortment of tunes, from classic Anastacio Mamaril to pop songs of the day, together with new visiting artists covering the songs of late 1970s "jukebox queen" Imelda Papin.
Of course, local officials, balikbayans, and other perfumed guests -- in their fineries -- warmed up to every performance by dancing the sweltering summer night away.
On a minor note, I noticed that Don Podring played a classical piece that was regularly used at Bayambang Central School as graduation marching tune once upon a time. Who knows the title of that piece?
