The Philippines' first Institute of Women’s Studies was founded by a nun who is a Bayambangueña, descending from one of the old clans of this town. She is Sr. Mary John Mananzan.
Sr. Mary John was "the National Chairperson of GABRIELA, a broad alliance of women’s organization, for 18 years. She served two terms as President of St. Scholastica’s College. She was a member of the Administrative Council of the Communio Internationalis Benedictinarum (CIB) for 4 years, and a member of the board of the United Board for Christian Higher Education for 9 years."
