There are tunes composed for every purpose and occasion, resulting in various forms of music. Traditionally, there is the tambayo (lullaby), petek or harana (serenade), dangoan or dangley (generic term for song), himno (hymns, religious songs), etc.
Pangasinan historian Rosario Mendoza-Cortez did not mention anything about this aspect of the culture, but fortunately other scholars took up the task, notably Perla S. Nelmida, Lydia Ico, and later on, Nelmida's daughter, Ma. Crisanta Nelmida-Flores. From Bayambang, there was also Marina Sabangan's 1968 Philippine Normal University thesis, “A Study of the Legends, Customs, Superstitions, Proverbs, Folksongs, Folk Dances and Ballads of Pangasinan-speaking Towns in Pangasinan" and PSU-Bayambang professor Elsa F. Quinto's own compilation of notated folk songs. From their work, we learn that local folk songs were called “Kabayawasan songs,” as these were often sung by natives under the bayawas (guava) trees while resting from farm work (“Malinac lay Labi,” “Walay Manok kon Taraz”), and the songs talk about what else but the natives’ natural surroundings.
Nelmida-Flores makes mention of the “Kansyon na Dumaralos” and “Kansyon na Sumisigay” as folk songs reflective of the Pangasinenses’ main livelihood of farming and fishing. And as noted by Arabela Ventenilla Arcinue in her book, “Lingayen: Memories of Times Past,” another such song is “Diad Kapasolan” (Sa Kabukiran; In the Farmland) which goes a step higher by being didactic in nature, “to instill positive values” among the youth. Other titles include “Nanrosas so Capasolan,” Ligliwa’y Ateng,” and “Ay Isa, Ay Dua.”
We also learn that cancionan is the term used to refer to singing in which two singers (often male and female) deliver memorized songs as verbal jousts, i.e., in answer to each other's sung-through romantic message, to the audience’s entertainment. The "song joust," Nelmida-Flores writes, is Pangasinan's answer of sorts to Bulacan's dupluhan (or Tagalog provinces' balagtasan in general), Pampanga's crissotan, and Ilocos' bukanegan.
A type of cancionan is called suwayan or turbaan (from the Spanish torvar, to compose a ballad, etc.), in which the composition (panagturba) is done impromptu, and the exchange often results in high hilarity due to the verbal wit inherent in this kind of exchange. Melchor Orpilla points out that this form of singing is unique to Pangasinan.
A survey of other Pangasinan folk and classic songs reveals songs that explore varied subjects and express a wide gamut of emotions, even delving into various shades that register as happiness, joy, mirth, fondness, sadness, loneliness, longing, regret, anguish, irritation, anger, contempt, contrition, fear, dread... This lends Pangasinan songs the psychological soundness of the Psalms, i.e., the musicians are in touch with their inner selves. Accompanied by native (e.g., kutibeng, which resembles the ukelele) and introduced musical instruments (percussions and strings), there are songs sung by children, men, women, duets of men and women, and, as mentioned, ‘duels’ between men and women. Many songs are noticeably slow-paced, harking back to the unharried days of yore, but certainly there are also songs with a fast, celebratory tempo – the staple of many a baile (sayawan) and bansal (wedding celebration).
The Pangasinan romantic songs are especially well-received by outside audiences, finding them charming, both the music per se and the elegant sound of the sung-through Pangasinan language. They are also particularly numerous, coming in such an iteration of expressions. Epitomized by the series of “Rosing songs,” as further noted by Nelmida-Flores, these love songs are markedly sentimental and heartfelt to the point that would embarrass anyone with a bent for modernist restraint and obliqueness. The lyrics are mostly direct or straightforward but peppered with poetic lines too, and at times are out-and-out metaphors (“Limon Kan Kakanen”). "Pusok so Mannangnangis" is reportedly most likely a song that originated from Bayambang because it was very popular in this town. These songs may be seen as the primordial version of torch songs and rock ballads of today, which revel in high, unbounded, unembarrassed show of emotions.
Distinctive to Pangasinan are the wedding songs, "Pammatanir," in which the bride tearfully bids her parents adieu, and "Pagatin," wherein the groom's parents gladly welcome the bride and her parents into the family, and other songs specifically depicting one's relationship with in-laws.
Apart from the deeply felt pieces, there too are the lighthearted ones -- in fact, some are decidedly characterized by levity. An example of a malurey or comical song is "Bilay na Sugarol."
No matter the tone and style, these songs have the mellifluousness of Agno's tributaries and the mellow swinging of the hammock on a breezy day. They evoke the tender rural scene that must have been typical of Caboloan, where bamboo thickets sway in the background under the lambent sunshine.
An anomaly is the freestyle (as opposed to metric/measured) singing of the cantores or the village prayer chanters – surely an unalloyed, indigenous, i.e., precolonial, form that somehow got carried over even with the advent of Christianity.
Beyond Folk and Classics
On top of the bedrock that is Pangasinan folk music lies the colonial, postcolonial, and contemporary musical expressions that evolved as a palimpsest of influences, including influences from other Philippine ethnic groups and especially Spanish and American culture. These are obvious with the use here and there of tango, waltz, and chacha beats and American western or country music, for example.
With the introduction of Christianity, Christian religious songs in the Pangasinan language are also as numerous (both in Catholic and, later on, Protestant churches), from the incredibly lengthy (because epic-like) “Aligando” and its abbreviated version called “Galikin” of Christmas season, to the "Salve Cruz Sankasantosan" of Santacruzans, the “Pantawtawag” on All Souls' Day, and most especially the hymns sung in all parts of the mass that require communal singing as led by a choir: "Ama Mi," "Katawan, Mangasi Ka," and so on.
The “Aligando,” “Galikin,” and “Pantawtawag,” it needs to be said, are songs most probably unique to Pangasinan.
These religious compositions must have been born when the local vernacular was introduced as a medium of communication in the Novus Ordo mass, which was originally said in Latin. (A side note: Up until the ’70s and ’80s in Bayambang, a typical mass had English, Tagalog, and Pangasinan choir songs sung alternately. A notable himno is the "Gozos nen San Vicente Ferrer" in honor of the town's patron saint.)
A songstress named Rosie Evangelista is credited for having popularized many Pangasinan classics in modern times, and the others are Perlita Radam, Corazon Caldona, "jukebox queen" Juvy Resultay, Linda Lazo, Kristela de Guzman, Rancy Evangelista, Armando de Leon, Abe Francisco, and the couple Eduardo Paragas and Cres Quinto.
In Bayambang, a couple who performed folk songs up until the era of cassette tapes was Julian 'Juli' Perez and his wife Elena or 'Leling.' A fellow folk musician who gained fame in iconic levels is Lorenzo "Tason-Taso" Morante of Dagupan City. Others would remember such names as Felix "Dalin-Dali" Peralta and Delia Urhalu.
In town fiestas, radio stations, YouTube channels, and other platforms today, Raul "Insyong" and Gildo “Gusting” Tamayo of Sta. Barbara lead the pack in the rendition of novelty songs. As is the nature of such ditties, they are funny, if not hilarious and at times naughty or downright bawdy (and potentially a turn-off to polite society). The duo’s “Arroz Caldo nen Corazon” competes with “Agi Tugi” by another artist (Sofing Tamayo) as the bawdiest of Pangasinan novelty songs. Among Insyong and Gusting’s runaway hits are also the most hilarious: “Mangiwgiwgiw” and “Ponsyano.” “Mangiwgiwgiw” is based on the original folk song "Mairap so Mangaro." A number of their songs are adaptations from or covers of old hits of the day, Filipino and foreign, while employing the Pangasinan language for the lyrics and thus ending up with totally different subjects. Parody songs also make some noticeable presence online in this regard. The wordings are, of course, meant to be in stark contrast to the lyricism and high-mindedness of the petek.
Government entities have come up with their own music for mandatory playing in such occasions as flag-raising ceremonies and other official events, like in the provincial anthem, "Luyag Ko tan Yaman," which was composed by Raul Tamayo, municipal anthems (as in Bayambang’s “Baley Ko, Tawir Ko,”), and tourism jingles.
Lamentably however, Pangasinan-language music has not evolved into an equally voluminous number of original compositions in modern renditions, with the language having gone out of fashion (as "prestige language," to use an anthropological term) after the mandatory bilingual education in the mid-1970s. Yolanda Sotelo of the Philippine Daily Inquirer’s Northern Luzon bureau has featured Analyn Servinias Bautista as one of the very few ones leading a lonely fight, especially for creating original compositions that present-day audiences will patronize. In Bayambang, one composer writing in the vernacular is the media man Oscar Ora of Brgy. Telbang.
In parallel, the local zarzuelas have not developed either into full-blown stage musicals despite a rich heritage material as basis. The shift in policy, it is said, effectively divorced Pangasinans from their very identity and rich cultural heritage, somewhat creating widespread amnesia.
Cultural groups such as PSU Bayambang’s Tambayo, Bayambang Choral Group, and similar groups before them have striven to make some dent, but their efforts are at best valiant to the point of quixotic in the face of prevailing preferences of the masses.
Maybe there is a need for new creative strategies that will reach critical mass, so this dismal state of affairs may create a huge opportunity for Pangasinan music to grow at an accelerated pace, making up for the gapingly empty output in stretches of time – a daunting challenge that now lies in the hands of today's generation of Pangasinenses.
Here is a rundown of some of the most popular Pangasinan folk songs and classics, followed by a sampling of the most well-known religious songs and current novelty songs.

Peaceful is the night, the hour of quiet has come.
Gentle is the wind mixed with the fog.
Sweet was my dream, but I awoke at once
Because of your beauty, which I can only caress,
Especially when, oh you, life, I behold
That all the sorrows I am carrying in my heart are wiped away.
When I remember your sweet ways,
I can’t possibly forget you
Not until I die.
Peaceful is the night, the hour of quiet has come.
Gentle is the wind mixed with the fog.
Sweet was my dream, but I awoke at once
Because of your beauty, which I can only caress,
Especially when, oh you, life, I behold

I have a little bird, Taraz,
Dearest little bird;
Whenever I talk to him,
He just in front of me.
Taraz, I said, darling bird, Taraz,
What are you sulking about with me
When I didn’t whip you
Or punish you and hit you with blows?
If I were really cruel
I would give you whipping for breakfast
You’d have beatings for lunch
And you would have hit black and blue for dinner

Bulan-bulan is going round and round
Crab, crab, crab
Crawling very slowly
Prawn, prawn, prawn

Look at siwi-siwi
It moves closer, then farther away
Look at bolasi
Getting out of the water, but its lips are flapping up and down.

LAWAS KAN PINABLI
(MY BELOVED)
English version
You are my beloved
My one and only, the joy of my sadness
Every night and day
You are always on my mind
That I am the one whom you love
You seem to have forgotten
The yearning of your heart
The apple of your eyes
If you are in the state of sadness
If you are restless and lonely
In your heart and in your feeling
That longing for my love
The time that we have not seen each other
If I am to be asked
Even for a longer time
The love that you have entrusted
The love that you entrusted
Forever it will be strong

Since you left

The delicious food served

CHURCH/RELIGIOUS EVENT SONGS
Rivaling the popularity of “Malinac Lay Labi” is “Ama Mi,” the Pangasinan version of “Pater Noster” (“Our Father”). It is like the national anthem of Pangasinenses.

by Raul "Insyong" Tamayo
Dumaralos ya si Inggo
Samplura ni ra'y anak to
Tan natan et malukon
ni lamet si misis to
Masisiba ni ra'y anak to
Kulang day duwaran salop

Pakaskasi awawey nen Inggo
Itetepel ton naynay so eras to
Pati siraen ton tuyo, inbatik na aso
Si Inggon dumaralos
No unla layan undalos
Duweg to'y mabetbet ya nabulos
Si Inggo et maanos

Karsonsilyo to lay manluslos
Unsempet ed abong da labos
Si Inggo et gumayugoy

Pati say tamos to et tauy-taoy

Duweg to'y mabetbet ya nabulos
