SAMPLER: Pangasinan proverbs from Nelmida collection

Man-anos ka, ta no walay anos, walay pakagamor. (Be patient, for where there is patience, something will be attained.)

No anggapoy pasensia, anggapoy naalam a indulhensia. (If there is no patience, there will be no indulgence gained.)

Say manaral, manderal. (He who is learning destroys something in the process.) 

Anggapoy ompatey ed dingot. (No one will die of dirt.)

Say anawet kon anawet manbetagan. (Two hard ones will knock each other out.)

Say alablabas lan aro, no maminsan makarisgo. (Too much love sometimes destroys.)

No anggapoy siblangan, anggapoy elet na arowan. (If there are no quarrels, love will not grow stronger.)

Say masaol ag makarimol. (The cheater never wins.)

Say matila matakew. (The liar is also a thief.)

Say ngiras babantayay eras. (Hunger stalks the lazy one.)

It bears leaves, flowers, and then fruits

Say ermen babantayay liket. (Behind sorrow, joy awaits.)


Say bilay binayes labat. (Life is just borrowed.)

Say patey bilay. (Death is life.)


No iner so kaksilay too, diman so pateyan to. (Where a man's strength lies, there he dies.)

No iner so niparokolan mo, diman met so bangonan mo. (Where you have fallen, there you will rise.)

Say balaw ibeg. (Despising others is simply envy.)


Agda topaken so mangga no ag amayamay so bonga to. (People will not throw stones at a mango tree unless it bears much fruit.)

No labay moy manliket agka maibeg. (Do not be envious if you want to be joyous.)


Anto ni gawaen mo'd dika no say kabayo inatey la? (What would you need the grass for if the horse is already dead?)

Say liket tan say ermen manbalbales. (Joy and sorrow take turns.)


Say pagbabawi walad onor. (Repentance comes last.)


Say alabas ya talabit, makatorok na sabit. (Too rapid strides can snag a thorn in the leg.)


Ibabatikan koy pitek, nakar koy lunek. (Running away from mud, I fell into the mire.)

No iner so naplagay barang, diman so panlegepan. (Where the bolo has fallen into the water, there must you dive.)

No onalis so pusa, say otot mangalaw ira. (When the cat goes away, the mice will play.)

No antoy pibitla, sikatoy walad walna. (What is always on one's lips is inficative of a person's character.)

Say ilalak tambayo'y irap. (A child is joy in hardship.)

Say makili maninawa naani. (The industrious one will live in future comfort.)

Say kuarta naalmo, say bilay ag naalmo. (Money can be found (or earned), life cannot.)

Sa kalilingo kaugalian, sa pangitepel sankarakpan. (To make a mistake is natural, to bear the wrong is most admirable.)
