Probably not a lot of people know that the resident graphic/layout artist and editorial cartoonist of the “Balon Bayambang” official newsletter of the municipality is Jojo Casanova.
A member of the town’s Terrado clan, he was volunteered by his cousin, Mayor Cezar Quiambao, to help out the local government by rendering pro bono work on the said monthly publication and other design matters.
Casanova is a graduate of Fine Arts, major in Advertising, at the Technological University of the Philippines, so it’s no surprise that he leans towards artistically inclined work.
Currently the head of the Advertising and Promotion, Events and Graphic Design division of the Royal Mall, he is the creative force behind the papier mâché displays at the mall which were always well-received. His specialty is creating logo designs, and one of his most notable outputs is the official logo of the Municipality of Bayambang.
When he is not busy lay-outing the newsletter, illustrating the month's editorial, or designing other establishments outside of town, he is also into producing caricatures or exploring places on adventure trips together with his fellow rider buddies.
A long-time resident of Manila, he transferred his base to Bayambang, Pangasinan, in 2010.
His digital caricatures, in particular, are not the typical sketch characterized by high distortions for comic effect. In cases wherein his clients are non-celebrities, he uses a pre-existing photo of the person as basis and starts from there. He distorts other aspects of the facial features when he thinks it is necessary, but he retains most of the features.
"This is because the resulting caricature might not be recognized by most people," he explains, "unlike caricatures of famous people which can be far more easily recognized by the general public when their striking facial features are exaggerated."
What makes his sketches even more fun is the array of objects associated with the person which he arranges around the subject, be it a telling book or other objects indicating personal occupations and lifestyle preferences.
Many of his clients are family members or close friends of the person being depicted who wanted a framed caricature as a gift to that person on the occasion of his or her birthday or some other milestone.
Based on the clients' feedback, one can consistently see signs of satisfaction from his representations of peculiar lives lived according to the taste and personality of the subjects being depicted.
It is evident in Casanova's body of work how much he enjoys his creative pursuits.
